A concrete surface is only as good as what sits beneath it. Load travels down from the wearing surface through the reinforcing and base course into the sub-grade, and on Waiheke that sub-grade is usually reactive clay that swells and shrinks through the year. Get the layers wrong and the slab telegraphs it — cracking, settling, water pooling where it should be running away.
So every driveway, car park and path we pour gets specified from the ground up: excavation to a depth that suits what we dig into, compacted base, reinforcing sized for the loads the surface will actually carry, and a finish with enough texture to stay safe on a wet slope.
